Recovery seems to be knocking at the door of hitherto gloomy business environment - the sensex is improving, demand of the products is indicating upward trend, employment opportunity is showing upswing beyond expectations. It seems very soon we shall come out of the darkness of the recessionary clouds. Nothing can go beyond the laws of nature. The sanctity of natural boundary is unquestionable. Once it is found infringed, we become victims of our own choices and have to pay a heavy premium. Recession around the world can be said to be the most recent instance, which cropped up due to the violation of basic norms of profitability and liquidity by some unscrupulous organizations. Ultimately, the people doing genuine business find themselves cheated. Basics such as prudence, materiality and transparency are of prime importance as far as the continuity and development is concerned. In case of a common man or corporate, if business will not take care of its stakeholders, the institutions cannot be expected to survive or grow.

The highly impending issue before us is what are our objectives? Because without objectives we are directionless. We should know what do we want to become in the years from now. Plans and decisions can only be aimed at certain goals. We cannot work aimlessly for a long time. It is well-tested dictum that clearer the perception of the objective, greater the chance of registering measurable success. Success is a relative term, where achievement is compared with target - if achieved, it is success otherwise a failure. Mostly, it is found that institutions rarely recognize what they exist for, and the students-why do they join the institutions. We come across a large number of students these days, who while deciding about their institutions of study, overemphasize the issue of placement that has ripple effect on the selection of an institution. Undoubtedly, it is rewarding as far as career opportunities are concerned but it takes very undesirable shape and hampers their studies if such a thought persists during the whole long program. Therefore, selection of an institution should be carefully done on the basis of ground realities, the potential and capabilities of students, the extent of institutional support for their upliftment in terms of knowledge, skills, attitude and finally the placement. The students should consider above mentioned features in one go. Once the decision of selection of an institution is taken, it should be honoured and supported whole-heartedly. Fruitful outcome of any association is always dependent on mutual trust of the institution and the students.

Success is said to be the outcome of two things - efforts and luck. And it is said, “God helps those who help themselves”. So, the entire onus lies on the efforts made by us. The question then arises, whose efforts are required - the management, the faculty, the suppliers of books, providers of infrastructural facilities, the corporate world, the authors of the books or the students. Nevertheless, the efforts of all, especially the faculty members and management are important, but the personal efforts of students are crucial to their success. The faculties can guide them, show them the right path, train them in the process, inculcate values but ultimately it is the students who have to earn. Earning is mistakenly used only in relation to money, whereas earning is equally crucial and important in the achievement of everything that matters in human life. For example we earn degrees/diplomas through rigorous studies, name & fame by hard work, respect in the society by observing & practicing values, love and place in hearts of others through caring for and helping them. Therefore, in this world, in order to be successful, we have to earn Good Luck by our focused dedicated and untiring efforts. Napolean seems to be right when he said “There is nothing impossible in this world.” But to prove it true in our life, we need to bank upon our own efforts for earning.

Having decided for career in Management, we must know what actually our role as a Manager is. As a Manager, we are accountable to the whole society, our real success lies on how contributive we are in making the society pain-free and progressive. Real tests are not those which we qualify to acquire degrees and diplomas but the ones that exhibit our ability to perform within the organization and to serve the public. Basic CSR is how do we contribute towards society while performing routine functions and discharging our duties. However, the choice is ours whether we want to emulate Narayan Murthy, JRD Tata or Ramalinga Raju?

To hone the skills of our students, we at MSM, have designed our course curriculum and extra co-curricular activities in such a manner which aptly takes into account the requirements of corporate world as well as what society expects from today’s Manager. Today’s Manager is not only required to be taught and trained as how to manage a situation, how to lead an organization, but he is also required to be trained about how such healthy environment can be developed inside and around us, so that it results into a fruitful venture and also brings peace and prosperity for everyone.

Students are the strength of any educational institution. Just like a father’s name is carried forward by his children, an institution is known by the performance of its students. I feel deeply honoured by their rigorous and untiring efforts for making this institute win 2nd Prize in Students Paper Presentation held at ISB, Hyderabad and 1st & 2nd Runners-up in the Grand Finale of All India Students Management Simulation Games organized by All India Management Association at Coimbatore. This will definitely inspire the existing and new entrants to achieve newer heights.

I am thankful to our Alumni Members and Placement Partners who have actively supported our students for providing them an opportunity for industrial visit & training, as well as, considering them for final placement at their esteemed organizations. I hope our association will result into fruitful ventures as always.

I wish all the students aspiring for management studies a great success in all endeavors and heartily welcome the students on their joining MSM.

Thanks,

D.K. Ahuja
